The H2020 Energy Modelling group together with the European Commission DG Research & Innovation are pleased to announce that the 5^th EMP-E Conference will take place virtually between 26-28 October 2021.

The annual EMP-E conference brings together Europe’s energy modelling community over a three-day period in a forum for deep exchange of research and modelling practice and varied discussions. The event will feature a balanced mix of high-level panel discussions and interactive workshop sessions to enable a peer-reviewed digest of models and policy insights for the transformation of the European energy system. The EMP-E 2021 conference will be a forum for exchange among researchers and modelling teams from across Europe; from H2020 projects, representatives of the European Commission as well as partners from industry and civil society.

The content of the three days will be arranged as follows under three broad themes:

• Day 1: Policies and Targets: Targets for 2030 and 2050, COP26, biodiversity and environment policies and aiding post COVID recovery;
• Day 2: Linking Sectors and Technologies: The building sector, smartness of energy systems, digital input and technological diffusion; 
• Day 3: Modelling-specific issues: How to promote better transparency, collaboration across modelling teams, how to capture (model) social and behavioural change.

EMP-E was created in 2017 and has since been organised on a yearly basis by the H2020 Energy Modelling group – a group of 8 projects funded by the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Programme. This year, the event is coordinated by SENTINEL – the Sustainable Energy Transitions Laboratory, with support of NAVIGATE, SPINE, WHY, OpenENTRANCE, AURES, PLANET, Plan4RES and MAGNITUDE.

The MAGNITUDE final public workshop was held online on 17th March from 9:00 to 13:00 CET
This workshop “Unlocking Flexibility Potential of Multi-Energy Systems” was dedicated to the presentation of the main project results, lessons learnt and recommendations.
Feedback and outlook from real-life Case Studies was also be provided.

The MAGNITUDE policy workshop “Energy Integration: from Policy to Action” was held online on 18th March from 9:20 to 12:30 CET
The MAGNITUDE policy recommendations were presented followed by roundtable discussions on the current policy framework.
The first roundtable focused on the high level aspects of system optimization at European level, followed by a discussion about what integration means for operators of energy infrastructure.

The annual MAGNITUDE General Assembly and Advisory Board meetings were held virtually on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th November respectively.

As in other years, the General Assembly was restricted to project partners and highlighted the past year’s project results as seen through the seven case studies and upcoming work for the last six months of the project.

The Advisory Board meeting was open to the Advisory Board members, external panellists, and colleagues from some of the partner institutions. Over 50 participants took part in the half-day event. The agenda consisted of a MAGNITUDE project presentation by Project Coordinator, Regine Belhomme (EDF), a 3 prong roundtable discussion and 3 MAGNITUDE demonstrations. The roundtable discussion was chaired by Alessandro Provaggi (EuroHeat & Power) and topics included:

• Maximize Flexibility from Multi-Energy Systems to System Operators, moderated by MAGNITUDE partners Edoardo Corsetti (RSE) and Nicole Pini (Eifer)
  • Panellists: Luca Marchisio (TERNA), Stefano Rossi (ARERA), Elena Tomas-Aparicio (Mälarenergi), Gregor Taljan (Energie Netzte Steiermark)
• Different levels of aggregation for facilitating the market access for multi-energy systems, moderated by MAGNITUDE partners Sergey Klyapovskiy (DTU) and Christoph Gutschi (Cyber-grid)
  • Panellists: Kristian Honoré (HOFOR), Markus Riegler (Austrian Power Grid), Anne-Véronique Fauré (Enedis), Elisabetta Bourla (A2A)
• Market-based pathways towards successful energy system integration, moderated by MAGNITUDE partners Kris Kessels (VITO) and Ana Virag (VITO)
  • Panellists: Pierluigi Mancarella (U. of Melbourne), Anthony Papavasiliou (U. Catholique de Louvain), Tomislav Capuder (U. of Zagreb), Marcelo Saguan (EDF)
• Demonstrations of MAGNITUDE solutions were given by Edoardo Corsetti (RSE), Mehdi Madani (N-Side) and Christoph Gutschi (Cyber-grid).
